MGM Resorts International Overcomes Cybersecurity Crisis to Resume Normal Operations

MGM Resorts Recovers from Major Cybersecurity Incident Image

Amid a spate of cyberattacks targeting the gaming and hospitality sector, MGM Resorts International has demonstrated resilience by largely resuming its normal operations. A cybersecurity disruption had severely affected the company’s services, but swift action and strategic business continuity planning have helped bring the situation under control. The recovery effort shows the robustness of MGM’s cybersecurity architecture and its commitment to safeguarding customer data.

Flexible Reservations and Ongoing Challenges
Understanding the inconvenience posed to guests, MGM has introduced a flexibility policy for reservations made between September 13th and 24th. These bookings can be modified or canceled without incurring any additional charges. Although the company has taken significant strides in restoring most of its services, it acknowledges that certain features of its loyalty program are yet to be fully operational. The organization has not specified a timeline for the complete restoration of these services.

The company’s strong recovery performance post-disruption highlights its competitive edge in the industry, ensuring that its standing among the leading American gaming and hospitality companies remains intact. It also sends a message to both investors and customers about MGM’s preparedness and adaptability in the face of unforeseen cybersecurity challenges.

Cybersecurity Concerns Across the Industry

The cyberattack on MGM Resorts did not occur in isolation; several other companies in the gaming and hospitality sector also fell victim to similar incidents. Among them was Caesars Entertainment, which reportedly had to pay a ransom to secure its operations. Moody’s warning about a potential credit rating downgrade for MGM underlines the severity and financial implications of such attacks. Yet, MGM Resorts has refused to comment on this specific aspect.

Experts in the field, such as identity management specialist Okta, have confirmed that multiple hacking groups, including ALPHV and Scattered Spider, appear to be coordinating these cyberattacks. Okta disclosed that at least three other companies were compromised, highlighting the scale and complexity of the issue. In a parallel development, the online crypto betting platform Stake.com suffered a devastating loss due to an attack by the North Korea-backed Lazarus Group.
