Twitch took last week to share some news that will disappoint some of its users. The Amazon-owned platform decided to stop the live streaming of two online casinos. Blaze and Gamdom are the latest addition to the brand’s infamous blacklist that was making headlines last year.
They are crypto-based operators registered in Curaçao, just like most other banned brands. The announcement was made during the first week of August through the Twitch X (Twitter) profile. Besides the post, Twitch’s followers were reminded of the policy changes introduced in September 2022, when the company announced a crackdown on unlicensed gambling casino streams.
Per the company’s announcement, Twitch has decided to put Blaze and Gamdom on the prohibited list to create a safer user environment. People can no longer watch live streaming from these two online casinos. This decision comes from the platform’s ongoing commitment to ensure the community’s well-being.
Last year, Twitch took to social media to make a big announcement. The platform unveiled its decision to stop users from streaming content originating from four gambling websites.
Stake.com, Rollbit.com, Duelbits.com, and Roobet.com were all on the list. Passionate players will surely recognize these brands as leading casinos that accept Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. These websites typically operate under a Curacao iGaming license and sometimes welcome players from unregulated territories. Considering the US’s strict regulations and crypto casinos’ openness to American customers, Twitch has decided to ban streaming from such unlicensed operators.
The expansion of the prohibited list was not the only step taken by Twitch.
Additionally, the platform has banned the promotion or sponsorship of skins gambling websites associated with esports. This step’s main focus fell on titles such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. According to reports, the decision comes after some users misused the platform for scams and gambling problems.
Twitch has reported a significant drop of approximately 75% in viewership within the gambling vertical. This decrease comes after implementing its new gambling policy. The new measures’ positive effect is noticeable in complaints, scams, and promoting unlicensed gambling activities. However, it has negatively affected the platform’s traffic.
Still, Twitch stays dedicated to refining its policies further based on emerging trends.
Despite these stringent actions, Twitch maintains a balanced approach. The platform permits sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker activities streaming. This way, diverse content is available to keep viewers engaged and entertained in a safe manner.
In a recent statement posted on social media, Twitch reiterated its dedication. “Our goal now, as it was last fall, is to protect our community, address predatory behavior, and make Twitch safer.”
Many users are threatening to leave Twitch after its latest statement.
The most popular alternative platform is YouTube. Content creators can use Periscope, Streamyard, Vimeo Livestream, and Facebook Live to broadcast their action. Of course, the material must comply with the service’s T&Cs.
These platforms have issues themselves. They are not always able or competent to identify state or country borders. Regulators can enforce laws within their jurisdiction, but it is more challenging on the Internet. Streamers get viewers from all over the Globe, and each country has different gambling laws.
Moreover, some countries are smaller than these platforms. In that case, it is almost impossible to determine whose policy trumps whose.
With more than 330 million residents, the US doesn’t seem to have this problem. US law enforcement is a powerful force to reckon with, and even popular brands like Twitch amend their rules to be compliant.
